Each time I meet a child, I can’t resist asking, “Soooo, what’s in your college studying record? Something good?” Half the time, they simply blink at me and mumble, which is honest. However each occasionally, their eyes will mild up, and the gushing begins. There’s a selected magic to books like this: Those you’re assigned to learn, count on to slog by, and wind up falling in love with.
It occurred to me when my sophomore English class was assigned Wuthering Heights. The paperbacks had been handed out, and we left the classroom rolling our eyes, getting ready for an extended, dry learn. The following day, we virtually broke down the door to get in and begin screaming about Heathcliff and Cathy and, omg, Linton, ugh. We argued over that guide so passionately that at one level, a child truly fell out of his chair. And to this present day, if I carry up Wuthering Heights with one among my previous high-school associates, we nonetheless wind up sitting head-to-head, speaking about it for at the least 20 minutes. It seems like our guide.
I feel, partially, it’s the shared expertise that makes these college books follow us. It occurs in maturity, too, after all (increase your hand for those who learn Yesteryear this summer time). However as adults, we’re by no means required to sit down in a room at 9 a.m. and dig into it with a bunch of our friends. It’s an expertise we’ll by no means have once more (not as loud 15-year-olds, at the least). However cracking open Wuthering Heights feels a little bit like visiting it, if just for a chapter or so.
