Porsche patents a brand new W12 engine: What’s cooking?

Porsche has filed a patent for a brand new W12 engine. This comes after Bentley, one other VW Group firm, phased out W12s from its lineup.

The W12 that powered the Bentley Continental GT was primarily two VR6 engines mated collectively. Porsche’s model is a little more sophisticated. It has two banks of cylinders in a V-configuration and a 3rd financial institution sandwiched between them.

Porsche says, “The cylinders of the interior combustion engine are organized in a W-shape. Every cylinder head has not less than one consumption port and one exhaust port, whereby the consumption port is related to an air plenum for circulation, and the exhaust port is related to an exhaust gasoline discharge machine.”

“The air plenum is organized on the higher aspect, specifically largely overlaying it, such that air can circulation from the air plenum into the consumption channels from above, or might be sucked in straight in a straight line, thus with out curvature, by a reciprocating piston of the interior combustion engine, which is organized within the cylinder to carry out a considerably upward and downward motion. The air chamber thus has a gap for circulation reference to the consumption port, which is oriented within the route of the crankshaft.”
