What Do You Wish to Study This 12 months?

cat on a piano

Each different Tuesday night, my husband, our three youngsters, and I pull as much as my grandfather’s home…

Our evenings at all times go the identical method. The pack of seven (!) child cousins trip their bikes round, taking breaks solely to run over and seize watermelon slices. The adults collect round my grandfather’s grill, prepping hamburgers and fries. Then all of us head inside to eat on the desk.

A pair weeks in the past, I used to be sitting at that very dinner desk, when my grandfather made a request.

“Oh, Jannellyyyy,” he crooned. “You realize what would make my evening? When you performed a music for us on the piano.” He nodded in the direction of the upright within the nook.

In idea, this was a stable concept. How charming would it not be if, in that second, I plopped myself down on the piano bench and began busting out present tunes?

However regardless of taking classes as a child, I hadn’t performed the piano in 22 years. Right now, my repertoire consists of solely “Chopsticks” and the intro to a Little Mermaid music. “Sorry, Grandpa, however no,” I informed him. “Perhaps one other time!” I then clunkily switched topics, asking him to share tales of his childhood in Bolivia.

Now right here’s the factor.

Since that dinner, I can’t cease fascinated with pulling my previous keyboard out of the attic.

Studying to play songs — like, “Linus and Lucy” or Coldplay’s “Repair You” — sounds thrilling, and working towards piano can be a pleasant method to step out of my day-to-day routine. I’d like to play a feel-good tune on the piano at our subsequent household gathering, with my grandfather singing alongside.

Plus, it’s been years since I final discovered a ability only for enjoyable. A pair extra issues I need to be taught this fall? The right way to Dutch braid my older daughter’s hair, and tips on how to make chocolate mousse. It’ll be enjoyable to really feel like a scholar once more and check out one thing low-stakes that has nothing to do with work or parenting.

What about you? Is there something you need to be taught? Or are you at the moment studying one thing new? Please share under.

P.S. Studying to swim at age 37, and the toughest tongue tornado.
